The History of Golf Hats
Old school golf hats were first introduced in the 1920s and 1930s. Sam Snead is credited with being one of the first players to wear straw golf hats, a tradition which Australian golfer Greg Norman revived in the 1980s. Nowadays, most golfers tend to wear baseball-style caps to protect their eyes and skin from the sun. Vintage golf visors and felt golf hats, once popular particularly among American golfers, are rarely seen on the tour, although visors are still relatively common.
Types of Golf Hats
There are countless types of golf hats. Ball caps, as worn by the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, are the most popular as they shield golfers’ eyes from the sun’s glare and also prevent them from getting sunburn on the top of their head. Visors are also widely used, particularly by female golfers. You may also see wide-brim hats and bucket hats while out on the course, particularly in more tropical climates.
